This week we meet Liz Cleland, the mind behind the food, travel, and lifestyle blog, Western New Yorker

The Western New Yorker, aka creative homemaker Liz Cleland, is a devoted mom, perpetual learner (she’s currently getting a master’s degree in education), and a contributing member of The Daily Meal’s Culinary Content Network of food bloggers.

She writes about food, gardening, her family, her various travels, and most importantly, about enjoying life. Check it out below:

The Daily Meal: What is the mission of your blog?
Liz Cleland: To encourage travel and home cooking

How’d you get started?
Teaching finance classes; it seems silly since I never write about that now.

What are some foods you can’t live without?
Chicken wings and Shepherd’s pie

Are there any foods you can’t stand?
Squash... ew!

What is your proudest post?
Any posts that showcase my son; he is my greatest achievement!

What is your biggest blog blunder?

Do you have a memorable comment from a reader?
"You are truly talented.”

What’s on your cooking playlist?
Lindsey Stirling

What are some other blogs you love?
I love Mavis over at One Hundred Dollars a Month.

What are some food apps you love?
Does Pinterest count? I love being inspired and creating new dishes from what I have seen.

What is the best thing about blogging?
I can experience the world with my son as he grows up. We learn together in textbooks and then are physically able to see it firsthand. Hands-down, that is my inspiration for putting in those late nights on my laptop.

The worst thing about blogging?
The late nights on my laptop! I am always working because I do not like to settle for "just OK.”

Is there a recipe you’re currently obsessed with?
Yes! My nautical/pirate-themed Jell-O cup and chocolate-covered pretzel recipes we created for my son's birthday party.

What would even your most loyal followers be surprised to learn about you?
We completely eliminated sugar from our house due to my son's strict dietary needs. Even Pepsi (and oh, how I miss it!).
